In Arthur Miller’s The Crucible he implies that a rumor will not only hurt a person but change how that person opinions and feels about themselves. Abigail, a main figure, is changed by the finish of The Crucible as a result of gossip listened to around Salem. For example, when her uncle observed her and the additional ladies in the woods dance naked around a fire Abigail started out lying. When Betty woke up and whimpers Abigail says, “My, you seem to be boosting. I talked to your papa and I told him everything,” (19). Abigail didn’t tell Parris because she would come to be accused of witchcraft and would need to clarify herself. Betty tells Abby that she understands Abby drank blood vessels and didn’t notify her uncle Parris. Abigail as well changed after her relationship finished with John Proctor.
